Your dosha encompasses your being- the entire physical, mental and emotional state is steered by your individual dosha.

Let’s get to know this mysterious Ayurvedic entity, shall we? We promise, it’s the doorway to great skin health!

What is Ayurvedic dosha? Understanding vata, pitta and kapha

Ayurveda doshas

Ayurveda is fascinating.

One only has to leaf through ancient Vedas to find out that your body is a shining being, driven by the five elements of the world. It is written that the elements, fire, water, earth, space and air manifest in each person in unique combinations. These combinations are called your doshas or “energies”. They are grouped into vata, pitta and kapha dosha.

Unlike popular belief, it’s interesting to know that everybody has the tridoshas, yet it is the dominant dosha which affects the body and mind intensely.

While the doshas define your body constitution, one shouldn’t mistake that a certain dosha is responsible for your health concern. An imbalance of your predominant dosha is the cause of disease or the state of feeling ”unwell”.

When you doshas are balanced, your mind and body are in blissful equilibrium. This reflect on your skin as well. Your skin may have its individual characteristics(because of yoru dosha) but it will be healthy and vibrant.

When dosha is affected by external factors, environmental trigger, diet, nutrition or mental stress, it goes out of balance harboring diseases.

How to know your dosha?

Let us explore your doshas closely to understand it’s impact on the body. This journey will help you better understand your body and therefore skin, and pinpoint why you may be experiencing certain skin issues.

Vata dosha or dry skin type

If you have vata dosha, you tend to be light and flexible in physical nature. As for skin, vata dosha typically means you are a thin and porous skinned person. They also popularly have an olive tone.

Skin issues that you may face include dryness and rough skin texture. Vata or dry skin is also more prone to showing signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles and sagging prematurely. This is mainly due to reduced hydration.

Pitta dosha known as Combination/Sensitive skin type

This dosha is predominantly fire and water elements. A person with pitta dosha is usually muscular and agile. As for skin type, their complexion tend to be the red/rosy tone which is warm to touch. They tend to have sensitive skin reacting aggressively to heat and the elements.

When out of balance, pitta skin may be acne prone and have irritation nd rashes. Breakouts are common and so are sunburns and sun damage.

Kapha dosha also known as oily skin type

This dosha is said to be a balance of water and earth elements. A person with kapha as the dominant dosha is said to have a bulkier body physique but great stamina. As for skin, it can be considered one of the best types of skin to have with respect to ageing.

Kapha skin type tend to be a shiny and oily texture. It also results in the person having large pores due to excess hydration. The heavy natural moisturisaton may be cause for pimples, clogged pores, blackheads and textured facial features when kapha is not in balance.

Is your dosha imbalanced?

Dosha imbalance manifests as diseases in our body. If you’re feeling tired, lethargic and stressed out, your dosha may be out of balance.

If you feel your body is weak and showing symptoms of illness, you may have dosha imbalance. One of the best indicators of dosha imbalance is your skin. It is said that skin is a reflection of the overall health of the body, if you observe very closely.

For each skin type, the imbalance manifests in different forms like pimples, dry skin, rashes, itching and wrinkles.

Understanding Vata dosha and how it affects my skin

Indicators of vata skin type are dry and thin skin. It tend to be flaky and cracked patches appear at the onset of the slightest humidity dip. Sometimes just being in an air conditioned room is enough to erupt dry patches on your face.

Your skincare should be aimed at the following things:

Hydrating your face. Moisture is essential for your skin, and frequent top up with moisturiser helps keep skin plump and healthy for longer.

Combating dry patches: You can use natural oils like virgin coconut oil or pure almond oil, or products with natural oil bases to nourish and hydrate your patchy areas.

Wash your face less: Do not wash your face unless you’re coming home from a day out or feel you really have to. Constant washing strips face of essential oils.

If you are a pitta dosha, your skin is warm to touch. You may get sunburnt quickly, you’re sensitive to a lot of skincare products and probably had bad reactions to some. At it’s worse, you have acne, greasy skin and sunspots.

Pitta dosha skincare

  • Use a non-oil based cleanser: You have a greasy skin in areas and have clogged pores. A water based cleanser will do a better job without further clogging your pores.
  • Use products consistently: Avoid irritation and try to use your product for a longer period to see results. If you like experimenting, take it easy and don’t switch products frequently which can agitate your skin.
  • Apply masks on T-zone only: You have a greasy forehead and nose area. Target this area when applying your clay or multani mitti masks.
  • Use products specifically for your skintype: This is very important for pitta skin. Use only Ayurvedic products with organic ingredients that fully capture the essence of pitta skin type and have remedies for the same.

Your combination skin calls for care when using skincare products and makeup. Here’s a checklist of things you shouldn’t be doing.

  • Mask it right – Applying a drying mask like a clay mask or multani mitti all over the face may seem like a great idea but no. Only apply on the oily T-zone to dry out the excess oils.
  • Never irritate your pimples and acne. Let them heal on their own. Do not apply products like lemon and garlic directly in your face packs as they aggravate skin.

What you may be doing wrong for your kapha skin type?

Kapha skin is easy to take care but there are certain things that can change your skin from glowy beauty to a greasy and pimple prone mess. Here are some tips to take care of:

  • Don’t over cleanse: You may feel like you need to clean your skin over and over again. Double cleansing is fine but never leave your skin parched and too dry.
  • Always remove makeup: You don’t want to clog your pores. As oily skin tends to harbor more oil and products, it increases the chances of clogging.
